The story is very similar to my father's, except he fled decimated post-war Italy, not Italy's next-door-neighbour Yugoslavia, suffering under Tito's tyranny.
As a young man, he hunted for game in (the former) Yugoslavia. Probably slipped across an unmanned border, if I know my dad… 😉
(He was 15 when he joined the Italian resistance.)
