Did you know the real history of Bella Ciao? Before the Partigiani adopted it and revised the lyrics?

Here's la GRANDE GRANDE Milva: Do you understand Italian?

https://youtu.be/gpKLSyYAE-w

Anyway, the song, as I understand, is about women in the 1800's, working in the northern Italian rice fields.

Where we get our arborio, to make "Panissa a la Domenica" baby. 😉

The town of Arborio was named for the rice: (English narrator.)

Those are the original lyrics that Milva sang in that video I linked you to.

Yippee!

Found a very poignant version of "La Gente Come Noi" the other day, and while I was posting to one of your comments, my phone died...

Figured it was an omen.

Trying again.

Think that "noi" might mean Cimate Activists. (On 2nd listen, and watch...)

What do you think?

I don't think this is climate activist protest. Don't forget the dock workers and especially in Trieste they had huge protests against the "green pass".

Based on the upload date, it was not green pass protests. So I read the description. (Duh.)

The images were of the dock workers strike in Trieste, which was the inspiration for this girl's upload.

Bang on.

Thanks.

Welcome :) thank you. I should have read the description too lol (duh x2). I just knew it had to have something to do with labor for the size of the protests.

No I did not know that but I did see one version yesterday with the women in the rice paddies. Now I know why, thank you. I wish I saved it. I was trying to locate footage of Italian partisans. This is a wonderful site to browse

PS: Thanks for the link. I have a lot of extended family, on my dad's side, in Bolognia.

I discovered that fact at the beginning of the lock-down pandemonium in my country.

I took to singing Bella Ciao loudly, as I vacuumed. 😉 It seemed to greatly bother my mum. (Sang it yesterday too, "a alta voce". She's pretty deaf, or feins it, but I bet she heard.)

You and I are curious cats Carina. Thought you might appreciate that tidbit.

Cheers! 👭❤🇮🇹

Thanks Carina.

I think about Le Mondine every time I make risotto these days.

There's a 3 woman group who sing old traditional Italian songs.

They call themselves "Le Mondine" and dress in "contadina" style costumes.

Pretty sure you've bumped into them on YouTube.

In my family, we all sang. (No instruments. A Capella.)

I learned that song, including all the harmony parts, before I was of school age.

Picked up my younger brother's $10 beat up Dime Store guitar, 2 strings missing, at some point (he never did anything with it except bash it around) and learned to play it by ear.

Still play guitar by ear. (Never learned to read music.)

I became a singer-accompanyist after that (Italian Von Trapp Family 🤣) until I ran away at a very young age.

My mother had a beautiful voice. I have memories.

My "family" never sings together anymore. (Not since the death of my father, at any rate. He died in early '84.)

The only time I ever sing, here, is while running the vacuum. 😢 As mentioned.

Fun Fact: I busked on the streets of NYC and Europe in my youth. Earned my daily bread.

You are quite remarkable 😃. I have a terrible singing voice but I still sing when no one is around to hear me. 😂

It's a pleasure meeting you, thank you so much.

Well I found you first Carina. ❤

Which makes you a remarkable person, in my opinion.

One of these days, we may even bump into one another in person, and we'll grab a coffee or tea or other beverage of your choice.

You just never know where the wind will blow this old gypsy who's not really a gypsy. 😁

We might even sing "La Gente Come Noi" together!
